241543903/Head-in-a-Freezer

David Horvitz is a multimedia artist who started the “241543903/Head-in-a-Freezer” meme in 2009, where the Google search for the numbers “241543903” would result of pictures of people with their heads in freezers. There are conflicting stories about how this phenomenon came about. One source states that the meme was created by Horvitz handing out 100 fliers to random young people in Brazil, and that the phenomenon then gained popularity through one of Brazil’s social networks, Orkut. If this were the case, this would be a rare occasion in which an internet meme were spread through physical means. Another source states that Horvitz posted a picture of his head in the freezer along with the number sequence “241543903.” Days later, a tumblr post with the picture gave the public instructions to take a photo with their head in the freezer and to tag it with the number sequence. The source says that the number series comes from a combination of the serial number of Horvitz’s refrigerator and bags of food in the freezer. According to this source, the picture was reposted the same day on another Flickr account, and within a few months a single topic blog dedicated to “Heads In Freezer” was registered. This source says that the headline of this page read, “Experiencing a MEME in the Making,” showing foresight into what was going to happen.

Sidenote: David Horvitz also has a book called “Everything that Can Happen in a Day” that deals with the dissemination of information on the Internet, which looks super relevant to our class.
